Adoption Q&A

BBBOnline Reliability Program

We are an average family who has rented for five years. We’ve always heard that you had to own your own home in order to adopt. Is that true?

No. You do not need to own your own home to adopt. You can rent or live with your family, but you must be financially stable. The homestudy you hear about is more about people and families, not where you live. I was actually interviewing a husband and wife who wanted to adopt. The husband mentioned that he really wanted to pay off his sports car before they adopted. They wife was surprised and had no idea. So, they decided to wait five years before adopting. What I’m trying to say is; it’s important to have you priorities straight. You want to start earlier rather than later. When families first start out you have to lay everything out on the table with each other. There are resources out there for you.
