Adoption Q&A

BBBOnline Reliability Program

I would like to know what type of education is required for a career in adoption?

It depends on what area of adoption you want to work in. Social workers need a degree, as do lawyers. To be a facilitator you need ethics, a business background (which helps in all businesses), and a compassion for excellence in adoption. You should be bonded, and it is best of you have been personally touched by adoption in some way-- as an adoptee, birthparent, or adopted parent. You will need a business license and a business plan.

If you have a heart for adoption , is might be easier to work for an agency or law firm and let them shoulder the 24 hour/7 day a week stresses that come with adoption. Working in adoption takes a commitment to excellence, often putting your client's needs ahead of your own, and the willingness to be available 24 hours a day and on holidays.

You would do best to have financial backing and resources to support your business for up to six months. There are a number of hidden charges, like insurance, long distance calls, advertising, legal and professional services you must have to succeed. There is always a need for ethical and caring professionals that know how to conduct business yet meet the emotional needs of those they serve. I wish you the best in your career.
