Adoption Q&A

BBBOnline Reliability Program

Is adopting a Native American baby difficult
?

Native American adoptions are not as difficult as you think. There are some tribes, such as the Navajo, that it is nearly impossible to adopt from. It is not only up to the birthmother, but to the tribe as well. You must make sure you have tribal permission, and a qualified attorney can help you. Tribes must always be contacted; never bypass a step. There are strict laws for Native American adoptions and if you don’t follow the laws your adoption can be overthrown in the future. Contact at least three adoption law attorneys and always get their qualifications. Some things to ask for are:

1. How many law suits have they had against them?
2. How many Native American adoptions have they done?

Always check out posting forums and message boards on the internet. Always educate yourself by reading, studying and asking questions.
